Caramelized Roasted Sweet Potatoes

THE PERFECT POST-PROCEDURE COMFORT: CARAMELIZED ROASTED SWEET POTATOES

Whether you are recovering from a recent visit to my chair or just looking for an effortless, nutrient-dense side dish for a busy weeknight, these roasted sweet potatoes are a staple in my home.

When patients ask me for recovery meal ideas that don't feel like a compromise, this is always at the top of my list. They require minimal effort, zero heavy chewing, and are packed with vitamins that actively help your mouth heal.

The Recipe: Silky & Caramelized Baked Sweet Potatoes

Prep time: 5 mins | Cook time: 45-55 mins | Serves: 2-4

Ingredients

  • 2-3 Medium Sweet Potatoes (My favorite kind are Trader Joe’s Murasaki sweet potatoes)
  • 1-2 tbsp Avocado Oil (Great for high-heat roasting!)
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • Optional Dentist-Approved Topping: A tiny dollop of plain Greek yogurt or a pinch of cinnamon.

Instructions

  1. Prep the Oven & Pan: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
  2. Wash & Cut: Thoroughly wash and scrub the sweet potatoes to remove any dirt, then cut them cleanly in half lengthwise.
  3. Season: Drizzle the avocado oil over the sweet potatoes, rubbing it thoroughly into both the flesh side and the skin side. Season generously with salt and pepper, rubbing it in so it sticks.
  4. The Caramelization Secret: Lay the sweet potatoes face down (cut-side down, skin-side facing up) on your prepared baking sheet. This traps the steam inside while the direct contact with the pan caramelizes the natural sugars.
  5. Bake: Roast for 45 to 55 minutes, depending on the size of your potatoes, until they are completely tender when pierced with a fork.
  6. Rest & Serve: Take them out of the oven and let them rest face-down for another 5 to 10 minutes. When you flip them over, you’ll be rewarded with a gorgeous, caramelized brown surface and a perfectly soft, scoopable texture.

Dr. Jeannie Ju’s Clinical Note: Why Your Smile Loves Sweet Potatoes

I recommend sweet potatoes to my post-op patients because they are an absolute powerhouse for healing. They are rich in Vitamin A and Vitamin C, both of which play a massive role in collagen production and tissue remodeling after dental work.

A quick recovery tip: While the skin gets wonderfully crisp with this method, if you are recovering from an extraction or surgical procedure, stick to scooping out the soft, buttery inside and skip the skin for the first few days to keep your healing sites perfectly safe and clear!
